Local Scholarships & How to Find Them

One of the key things that gets mentioned in scholarship search books is starting your scholarship searches locally. In some areas, the search for local scholarships is relatively simple while others are easier said than done. Some good places to start your search are: coffee shops, fast food restaurants, manufacturers of food and drink along with retailers specializing in office/work supplies.

Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts are two coffee shops in my area that offer up scholarships for those attending an institute of higher education. Outside of quick service venues, you can also explore small businesses. Some may be hesitant to offer scholarships due to their small size, but you'll never.

Do a search for local small businesses and look into whether or not they offer scholarships. If not scholarships then internships and if not internships the some type of sponsorship. To make the help make the offer(s) stick, try to target businesses that are relevant to your major.

A nice resource to explore that will assist you in your search are the books written by Gen and Kelly Tanabe. The 1001 Ways to Pay for College book is a great start and should be accompanied by other scholarship resource books. I referenced the Tanabes because they have been through the scholarship search and application circuit for quite some time.

Not only that but they shared a story of how they paid for the higher education utilizing nothing but scholarships they earned from around the way. A was a huge relief for their parents because they didn't have to take out any loans to help them foot the bill.
