Careers & Colleges

First exposure was in hard copy form via a magazine of the same name: Careers & Colleges. Every couple of months or so, my high school would get a shipment of the magazine for the teachers to disperse to the students. Every issue was filled with informative articles pertaining to any and all topics centering around higher education.

This was some years back so you can imagine how much has changed in regards to this publication. Doing a web search of "Careers and Colleges" will return a result, at rank one, of College Xpress; their new name. Highly excited because now I can revisit the mag I became addicted to back in high school.

You can still get all the information you need about college and financial aid as with the print publication. Topics that caught my attention: International Students, Transfer Students and Summer Programs. These three categories aren't often covered by education news sites and if they are, very little is shared.

The setup of the site requires registering to become a user. Sounds good, but not all like this idea of signing up just to view important content. Well there is a reason for the requirement.

Like majority of the education sites out there geared toward helping one find funds to help foot the bill for college, they are designed to cater to those first timers. You know, those kids who are entering college for the first time and are in need of some guidance. That said, there is another reason for the requirement: their scholarship drawing.

You heard right. They have hosted scholarship drawings since I was in high school. Its a $10K scholarship drawing where winners are selected at random. The drawing for the scholarship will be held in May.

As a heads up, the prize funds will be delivered to the winning student's school to be dispersed into their financial aid account.

Essentials:
If you have a twitter account, do yourself a favor and follow @CollegeXpress. The reason for this is because there are times when sites of this genre, will post to the minute info on scholarship opportunities. Feel free to explore the posts on their homepage.

There are many posts that bring attention to the unfortunate truth related to how lots of financial aid gets unclaimed every year. Many find this hard to believe until they research the reasoning behind the claims.
