Micro Jobs: Photography

The sheer mentioning of photography usually brings about panic because its viewed as a complex medium. True it can be complex but it doesn't have to. Photography has a variety of sub-categories and approaches that make it versatile.

How does this fit in with micro jobs you ask? Depending on your end product and subject matter, you can utilize a camera of your choosing to document what you have. Like creating sand art and or sculptures?

Take a picture and sell it online as stock or create a product with the picture on it and sell it. You can photograph landscapes, personal projects, your garden and even your belongings. Taking snapshots isn't easy while in taking courses; however, during days when you don't have classes you can take a little trip into town or to a nice park and snap some really good pictures.

Are you on break from school and looking for a challenge? Hit up some hotspots in town like conventions focusing on fashion, food, electronic entertainment, sports and recreation, business, comic books, cosplay, architecture, etc. Talking to the right people can grant opportunities in photographing items/scenes for specific publications.

Loads of Glitter
All that glitters isn't gold. The aspiration of just being down right awesome at taking pictures isn't as glamorous as one would like. Based on portfolio viewers, there are those that tend to submit same or similar pics on a repetitive basis.

To the point where the subject matter photographed becomes stale. This isn't to say that the subject matter can't ever be photographed. Though if you do, it has to be something fresh, new and like a breathe of fresh air.

Constructive criticism isn't easy to swallow especially when its on something you poured all energy in to get it just right only to have it chunked back at you with a "Its not good enough" note attached. Before you even go the route of telling the reviewer a piece of your mind, continue reading the rest of the note because chances are high that they left some valuable feedback that can assist you on the path of creating something worthwhile and memorable. It takes a lot to accept criticism but even more to acknowledge that there's room for improvement.

Unsure of Where to Start?
There's really no definitive answer to this question. All that can be said is, if you have an interest in something then start there. For example: if you're into food, flowers and makeup, you can start there by photographing some of your favorite dishes, favorite flora and some neat looking makeup effects.

To date, I've taken a couple of pictures focusing on food (namely self prepared dishes), gorgeous flowers that were planted along with a couple of random shots.

Sources of Inspiration (just a starting point)
YowaYowa
A two person team of photographers that photograph themselves "flying". They aren't really flying per se but the pictures they take say otherwise.

Hey Matthew
An artist of many hats. Though he dabbles in design, his photography is still something be marveled. The pics on the site are just a small sampling of what he's truly capable of.

Li Kovacs
She too also dabbles in a little bit of everything. Photography, design and illustration; to name a few.

These are just for starters. Feel free to utilize your own favorites as a starting point as well as for inspiration. Don't give up if you don't succeed the first time.

Keep at it till you get it just right.
