Ops in Education

Opportunities in education are pretty simple to find. Majority of the time, the opportunities are voluntary; i.e. unpaid. These opportunities are located throughout the virtual and real world communities.

Tutoring others is likely to top the list of education opportunities because just about everyone will need help with something or other in regards to course work. The options can go as low as primary school to as high as graduate school. Undergrad is my max but am up for assisting grad level when needed.

Next to tutoring is volunteering at local schools. As far as I know, anywhere from primary up to high school has volunteering opportunities. If you're looking to volunteer at a local college, you will have to consult someone at the college, preferably administrative staff members, about volunteering.

Your tasks will vary but most likely you'll be assisting teachers along with other members of the staff/faculty. Depending on the teacher and your willingness to speak in front of small groups, you may actually be granted some authority with assisting in class tasks which may include teaching the class while the teacher runs some errands.

With me, I'm a volunteer at a local primary school and have assisted the teachers I've been assigned to with leading group activities during centers, helping students with vocabulary building along with testing their reading skills. Other times I would be tasked with running copies along with putting together activity packets for students.

Tutoring
There are tutoring websites online where you can sign on as a tutor. However; some of these sites require pre-testing to ensure you will be able to tutor in the designated subject of your choice. The only issue I've run into with the testing is that not all of the problems will be familiar to the test taker.

As an example, I was preparing to sign on as a tutor on a tutoring site to tutor in a math subject. I had recently finished taking this subject as a course for school and felt I would fair pretty well with the testing. Unfortunately that was far from fact.

Only small portions of the math test were recognizable. My biggest obstacle came in the form of problems that were never seen before in all the years I've taken math courses. It wasn't even in my current math course textbook; a college level textbook at that.

Outside of tutoring based websites, you can setup an online tutoring service of your own through a platform of your own or via third-party. If online isn't your thing, then you can go the in-person route. This can be done at a local school via meetup, at the local library or bookstore.

Teaching
There are other forms of teaching outside of a physical classroom. There are virtual teaching opportunities that come in various forms through various platforms. I work with design programs and often times run into issues understanding how some programs function.

To gain a better understanding, I will seek out explanations via instructional videos where I'm taught the mechanics of specific programs I wish to use. This is where you swoop in to the rescue. You can create videos that teach individuals/groups how do something specific.

There are a variety of the subjects that you can cover and share through any platform of your choice. These platforms include but aren't limited to: SkillShare, YouTube, tuts+, Vimeo and a personal website.
