Culinary Ops

Culinary opportunities are every where but unfortunately they aren't as easy to get. Of course this all depends on where you are and how friendly management is. Some wonderful places to explore are resorts, fine dining restaurants, fast food/good food fast restaurants, food vendors along with the school you are attending/attended.

Depending on the culinary program structure of your school, you will be given the opportunity to work in a restaurant-like setting so you can get a grasp of the environment you will be working in during or after schooling. Some food places prefer you to be actively working toward some form of certification which will vary depending on your cooking position.

Resorts
Any type of resort will make for a nice start toward your blossoming culinary career. Explore your city's golf resort directories for opportunities in the culinary field. If you don't see a lot of openings, don't get discouraged because not everyone posts their employment opportunities in print/digital publications.

If you find a promising opportunity, give the business a call and inquire about available opportunities. Another option would be to visit the location in person, if you're able to, and speak with management. Not to sound like a broken record, but be professional in appearance as well as speech; and don't forget patience.

Quick Service Restaurants
Working in an environment where the pace is at a constant, yet fast speed could be ideal. Quick service restaurants are almost always looking for cooks to join the fray; not all but some. Even if its not where you want to be, its still a start in the desired direction.

Other options would be running your very own food truck to cook food you're passionate about. It can be dessert only, meal/snack only or a combo of both. The food truck option can be seasonal, part-time or full-time; it all depends on available funds as well as your schedule.

In a past post, mention was made about starting out seasonal or part time as a means of testing the waters. There are a variety of ways and opportunities for you to utilize to hone your cooking skills. This includes but isn't limited to volunteering for special cooking events like fundraisers, cooking drives, bake sales and working/volunteering in a soup kitchen.
