Internships: Recap

For certain the previous two posts on internships were pretty much inline with information overload. Seeing how the deadlines were closing in I wanted to make sure everyone had some sort of heads up about the opportunities so that some planning can take place. There were even a couple of scholarships in the mix so there was a little bit of most things.

Why So Serious?

The message or at least the premise of the importance in regards to internships was stressed quite a bit in past posts. I myself haven't participated in any internships as there weren't many opportunities near me and when you top that off with a lack luster portfolio the pickings get slim quite quick. Scholarships were at the forefront for a while but attention has since shifted towards internships due to so many difficulties that some students have encountered when then fail to land a job in the field of their respective major.

Internships have been hinted as being the key to landing a job in a students respected field of study either before or after graduation. As observed during research, location is key as some areas are hot spots for these opportunities. These hot spots with either be within reach or located outside your state of residence if not outside your native country.

A huge portion of the discovered internships were part of the Computer Science discipline with a select few being in other areas. Some were paid, some were not, some were stateside and some were not. They were interesting opportunities to say the least with requirements I wasn't expecting to see but knew there were individuals out there that met the stated requirements as countless examples have been seen online via micro projects.

So that begs the question...

How Did You Find These?

Several days if not weeks browsing through sites looking for inspiration on where to focus my attention on learning a few new skills. In the process, some internships as well as scholarships were discovered along the way. Two sites were passed over during the initial research phase but after discovering some internships a double back was initiated to see if any opportunities were available for internships (for at least one of them there were several available).

There was one of the options that was posted that wasn't really an internship but an actual job that had an Apprenticeship option available for those looking to get hands-on experience. Though that info alone doesn't completely address the question at hand but some who are familiar with the list of companies may have figured out the origins of the list already. So here's a little story.

2013 and 2014 were the years I was expose to E3 content; 2013 was the events and 2014 was the press conference coverage. Tried covering the conferences this year but there was a schedule conflict of sorts plus a major task surfaced on my end which put a lot of things that were planned on hold. Me being curious, I went through the list of attendees and jotted down their info for later reference.

The later reference portion lead to the internships list which, as mentioned prior, wasn't planned. It just came onto the scene out of the blue while working on something completely unrelated. Such a happy little accident.

So...What Now?

A massive dump of info followed by funny story of sorts. Many look for scholarships but those are starting to become scarce. Scarce by not many apply to a general audience.

Found the international directory by chance but wanted to do something a little different. Hoping to get back to the once a week schedule should nothing hit the wall in the process. Try to enjoy yourselves these next few days as some of you will be going on or are already on a break of some kind from school.

See you next time!
