Summer Break Work Ops

For most of us, Summer Break is fast approaching and we're trying to figure out what to do during that time to help us relax and regain our sanity. At the same time, the thought of what can be done to earn a little money has also surfaced; I'm assuming here but hope this is at least in the back of the mind somewhere.

What To Do
Some simple jobs include but aren't limited to: taking pictures of the sights, house sitting, kid & pet sitting, being a tour guide assistant, working at a frozen treat stand along with finding cool looking seashells. You can even blog about your experience and share pictures to accompany your posts; who knows, it could be a really good start to a potential travel blog.

There are no boundaries to what you can and can't do over break to generate income. With so much taking place around you and the town, you're bound to stumble across something amazing that will make for great podcast material. Have a passion for fashion?

Document some of the fashions and trends you've observed while roaming around town. You can even take it a step further by suggesting item pairings and possible places to go to shop. Kind of like what Allure, Lucky* and Seventeen -- to name a few -- do from time to time.

First Steps
This is great! But... how in tarnation am I suppose to do this?
Find something that captures your attention and stick with it. That said, don't be afraid to branch out and try something new. With the pictures venue, you can start with photographing a little bit of everything that peaks your interest while out and about.

Its perfectly fine for pictures to be taken spontaneously and repetitively -- same/similar scenes captured multiple times in different settings. If you're revisiting or have actually been in residence of an area to the point of knowing a little bit of everything, then you can team up with a local tour group/business and help with tours; there's opportunities for this so don't be afraid to ask.

Follow Up Steps
Be spontaneous. Be a sponge. Be you.

Take in everything that is around you and convert what you see into something others will enjoy. Don't be afraid to create your own style or own way of doing things. Just get out there and do.

Use the scenes you've captured and turned them into merchandise. Convert pictures into tangible pieces such as mugs, posters, post cards, collectible stamps, laptop/video game console skins, keychains, etc. Check local directories for any and all opportunities for work during the summer season; and other seasons.

*Lucky is no longer in print but their look books can possibly still be found online; check your local library as well.
