Scholarship Search Part 2: Books

Going online isn't always an option especially when web connections get erratic. Books are just as good as web resources and expansive. I like the book formats because they help provide a starting point for further research online.

The Ultimate Scholarship Book (current favorite)

This was a first purchase of mine in the scholarship books category. The listings were compiled by Gen and Kelly Tanabe who are considered scholarship maestros.

According to their bio, they both wanted to go to ivy league school but didn't have the ivy league money and their parents weren't able to assist to them. So they both hunkered down and applied for a variety of scholarships of which they won. The result: they attended and graduated from their school of choice without having to take out a single loan.

Regardless of the books publishing year, you can continue to utilize the book to find opportunities that can help you in the future. Speaking of such, you should know that the authors of this book are distributors of scholarships themselves.

Deadline for their current drawing is December 31, 2014.

Scholarships for Series

An interesting series of books that provide scholarship listings that are geared toward the specified ethnic group. The collection is wonderful with a balanced listing of merit and need-based scholarships. From observation over the years, there are certain ethnic scholarships that require a form/certificate for confirmation.

The general premise of the series is single out opportunities that may otherwise fly under the radar due to low competition. When it comes to scholarships, low competition is a good thing.

Taming the Tuition Tiger

A useful book especially when paired with other resources. Kathy Kristof compiled this book to show readers the options available to them in regards to funding a college education. She breaks down the sources and explains what they are along with how to utilize them effectively.

There's a little something of everything for everyone. Hence the suggestion to utilize this book along with your other resources.

A good starting point for exploring scholarship books is at the local library; school libraries included. There will be a wide assortment of books to choose from but usually the ones that have expansive lists are a great starting point.
